Stay Fit Despite Health Problems

Is illness, injury or life stress challenging you physically and/or mentally? Does age, mobility or arthritis pain challenge your fitness and mood? Instead of giving up or making excuses, consider these tips.

Exercise can reduce joint pain and mobility problems, increase metabolism, increase bone density and reduce depression. Listen to your body, but try to find ways to work around your pain or illness. If you can’t walk fast, try a normal or slower pace, Tai-Chi, gentle weight lifting or simple stretches. Try to keep moving to bolster both a healthy mind and body.

In addition to Mall Walking, consider Senior Centers which offer a wide range of fitness classes for very little cost. Group exercise encourages participation while it benefits your social and emotional wellness.

But you don’t have to leave home. There are chair exercises and stretches that you can do in the comfort of your house.

Always begin with a slow, easy warm up. Avoid locking your joints, quick twisting, standing too long and high impact exercises.  Extend your stretch, but never go to the point of pain.
