Be a Healthy Caregiver

November is National Caregivers Month. About 40 million adults provide unpaid care to another adult. The average age of caregivers is 49, and most are women. Most provide care to relatives, but some care for friends or neighbors. And, while the average time spent giving care is 24 hours a week, care for a spouse is much more time intensive.

Caregiving can bring significant physical, emotional and financial stress, so it’s important to take care of your own health and well-being. Here are some tips:

•Be realistic about what you can and cannot do. Break tasks into smaller items as necessary.
•Say no sometimes.
•Maintain your personal health. Develop a plan to incorporate exercise, healthy meals and sleep into your daily routine, and follow it.
•Accept help.
•Join a support group.
•Perhaps most importantly, spend time with healthy family and friends. Have fun, enjoy entertainment and laugh often.
