Arthritis

There are more than 100 types of arthritis and related conditions. Arthritis can begin slowly and mild, or start suddenly and cause intense pain. Signs and symptoms can come and go. It might cause joint pain, swelling and stiffness, or other health problems that seem unrelated, like fatigue or a rash. Most types cause inflammation and stiffness of the joints.

Joint health is important to independence, productivity and quality of life, but arthritis can cause disability. It is important to discuss your symptoms with a doctor to begin early treatment and prevention of further joint damage and other health issues.

The following can help manage symptoms and relieve pain:

•  Heat relaxes muscles and increases circulation.
•  Cold reduces swelling and numbs the nerves that detect pain.
•  Acetaminophen helps reduce pain but not inflammation.
•  NSAIDS (ibuprofen, naproxen) help reduce both pain and joint swelling.
•  Stay active. This strengthens the muscles that support your joints and preserves joint mobility.
• Follow an anti-inflammatory diet, which will be explained in the October Mall Walker newsletter to come.
